Management and Leadership Development:Building Future Supply

Report of the Advisory Group investigating provision in FE Colleges, by private providers and in organisations.

This report sets out the findings and recommendations of an Advisory Group set up to address management and leadership development taking place outside the business schools – that is through colleges, private and voluntary providers and by employers. The Group focussed on what was needed for business success. We worked against a picture of significant change in the way that organisations work and in their expectations of employees and managers. We considered what it will take for individuals and organisations to be effective in the future, taking the year 2010 to provide the focus for our thinking. There can be no certainties, but we judged that in the future management skills will need to be much more widespread in the workforce than they are at present; that managers as such will need high level abilities, to work in a less predictable environment, with a different balance between control and leading; that leadership abilities will be needed widely and at all levels, to motivate and inspire.
